Minimally Invasive Surgery
(MIS) has become the standard of care and is
proven to reduce wound complications, blood loss, length of hospital stays,
and recovery times for millions of patients.

These advances reduce technical complexity, lower costs and increase efficiency while potentially altering the point of care for some MIS procedures.


Innovative medical technologies have enabled MIS to flourish, though some limitations remain in the areas of surgical site visualization, instrument motion, operator control, and ergonomics.

In an effort to address these limitations in MIS, innovative and exciting surgical robotic systems and imaging technologies have been developed.

While these advanced systems have made a significant impact within the medical technology industry, many surgical centers and patients around the world are unable to access these systems due to their technical complexity and high cost of ownership.

To address this, several medical technology innovators are rethinking surgical visualization and instrumentation design by leveraging lower cost and user-friendly consumer product technologies.

Bryce Klontz   MODERATOR
President & Chief Executive Officer, New View Surgical
Bryce is an accomplished medical technology executive, having built and led commercial teams in the US, Europe and Asia. Prior to his role as CEO, New View Surgical, Bryce was the Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Woven Orthopedics after holding several leadership roles during a distinguished 14-year career at Covidien. At Covidien, Bryce was the Vice President of Commercial Strategy, Emerging Markets where he led efforts to build commercial capabilities within the Asia, Latin America, and EMEA geographies. He also held roles as Vice President, Surgical Devices, Asia and Director, Surgical Devices in both the US and Europe. Earlier in his career, Bryce played a pivotal role in the global launch of The Heart Laser System at PLC Medical Systems.

Sajani (Sunny) Shah, MD, MBA, FACS, FASMBS
Chief, Div of MIS/Bariatric Surgery, Dir of Weight and Wellness Center, Tufts Medical Center
Dr. Shah is a surgeon, educator and innovator, focusing on the treatment and care of obese patients. She leads a multidisciplinary team to deliver innovative techniques to help restore patients' health, wellness, and quality of life. Dr. Shah is well published in books including, Mastery of Surgery: Single Incision Laparoscopic Surgery - Lap Cholecystectomy; Minimally Invasive Bariatric Surgery: Neuromodulation; and journals including American Journal of Surgery, Journal of the American Medical Association, Archives of Surgery, Journal of American College of Surgery, and the Bariatric Times. She has also been involved in clinical research serving as the principal investigator in trials such as VBLOC (vagal blocking therapy) an innovative device to help lose weight.

Tom Calef, MSME, BSCE
Chief Technology Officer, Activ Surgical
Tom is a highly accomplished medical roboticist and seasoned leader of engineering teams capable of developing breakthrough innovation in surgical robotics. Tom holds multiple patents in robotics and surgical devices and has an extensive track record of taking surgical robotic platforms to market, having managed seven surgical robotics products through 510(k) approval. Prior to Activ, Tom was the Director of Advanced Robotics at Medrobotics, where his group was responsible for winning multiple design awards for innovation and product design of highly articulated surgical robotics. During his time there, he grew the Advanced Robotics group from 2 to 53 employees including clinical, electrical, software, and mechanical engineering. Tom enjoys mentoring and for 20+ years he has worked with a local high school FIRST robotics team.

Ilsa Webeck, MBA
Managing Director, MedTech Strategies
Ilsa Webeck works with companies on new technology initiatives focused on identifying value and actionable outcomes for growth. Through strategic planning, commercial perspectives, primary and secondary research as well as marketing leadership, MedTech Strategies identifies and clarifies how innovative technologies fit into the complex healthcare marketplace. Ilsa’s past roles include corporate planning, product management and early product strategy at Johnson & Johnson’s DePuy Spine, Biogen and Health Advances. Ilsa holds an MBA from the Tuck School of Business and a BA in Biology from Dartmouth College. She is an invited lecturer at the Boston Biomedical Innovation Center and is a member of the MDG board.
