The marketplace for technology to assist aging adults in the Longevity Economy is expected to grow to more than $30 billion in the next few years, according to the updated report by Aging In Place Technology Watch.
 
Program Description  
This session will review various new monitoring and mobile technologies to allow more people (including children, chronic disease patients and frail elders) to be treated more humanely and cost effectively at home.  
 
The report in Aging in Place Technology Watch speculates that the marketplace will more likely be based on customization of standard software, using existing platforms more than creation of senior-specific products.
 
Nearly three-quarters of medical expenditures takes place on a small number of chronic illnesses including cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes, and asthma. Many of these illnesses are particularly acute with our aging population.  
 
The cost of care in hospitals and nursing facilities to treat these illnesses as well as age related illnesses like Alzheimer/ dementia and Parkinson's disease and injuries from falls is increasing at a rate that cannot be sustained.  
 
The use of mobile devices that monitor patient symptoms and provide real-time advice on treatment and medication also have the potential to control costs. Moving to electronic systems for service delivery will save money and improve access.
 
There is also a need to remove barriers to adoption of mobile applications that aid in chronic disease management and make these tools much more widely available.  
 
The FDA has finalized its guidance on how mobile applications and regulated mobile medical devices are to be treated to clarify some of the ambiguities and help further innovation.
 
Experts from areas including technology, access to services and models for "Aging in Place" will provide insights into how Monitoring and Improving Health plus Aging in Place can occur.

Allan S. "Chip" Teel trained at the Family Medicine Residency at Lancaster General Hospital in Lancaster, PA and returned to Maine where he has been a family physician in private practice in Damariscotta since 1988. He has a Certificate in Geriatrics and has been Medical Director and provided patient care at Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilities. He co-founded the non-profit Eldercare Network of seven, small, home-like, assisted living homes in Lincoln County, Maine in 1995. In the mid 90's, he was an original incorporator of the multispecialty Miles Medical Group and then founding partner of Full Circle Family Medicine in 2003.  
 
His new company, Full Circle America, finds way to celebrate the lives of elders and helps them stay at home, connected to family, friends, community and personal interests. Using a High Tech, High Touch circle of caring, it creates a better balance between the non-medical and medical aspects of living. His book is "Alone and Invisible NO more".
