    Gregory Carlin

    Greg Carlin has extensive experience drafting and prosecuting hundreds of medical device, mechanical and software patents for university and corporate clients. Greg brings deep technical and legal expertise as a biomechanical engineer, medical researcher and in-house corporate counsel to a global medical device company to the service of clients in the medical technology industry. Greg frequently advises corporate officers, product managers, boards of directors, business development executives and research engineers on strategic approaches to product clearance, research and development and portfolio management.   Greg represents clients in both inter partes review and IP litigation. He worked as part of a team to successfully defend a large medical device manufacturer in multi-jurisdictional, multiple-venue patent litigation. He serves as counsel to a consumer products manufacturer in patent litigation matters. He has extensive post-grant experience at the USPTO, including inventorship-based interference on a pill sorting machine patent, ex parte re-examination of an embolic filtration device patent, and inter partes review petition against a well-known, heavily litigated nitinol stent patent.   Greg also has experience in performing IP due diligence for a range of mergers and acquisitions, excelling at identifying salient deal points and conveying a weighted understanding of the relevant IP issues to business development executives. He also prepares agreements associated with mergers and acquisitions, including complex, multi-staged collaboration, confidentiality, transfer, in-licensing and out-licensing agreements.   He received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering and his M.S. in Bioengineering from the University of Pittsburgh. He matriculated to The George Washington University, where he received his J.D.

    Craige Thompson

    Craige Thompson is the author of the #1 Amazon Best Seller “Patent Offense, 7 Steps to a Safe, Secure Patent Portfolio”.  He holds a degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering and a Juris Doctorate from the University of Wisconsin. He practiced as an electrical engineer, designing products for 10 years prior to law school. He gained acclaim for his ability to find weaknesses in opponents’ patents and became known as “The Patent Killer.” Craige was also able to account for those weaknesses when writing a patent and, due to being able to write a patent that quickly advanced through the USPTO, soon also became known as the Patent “Examiner Whisperer.”

    Scott Phillips

    Scott holds a degree in Engineering Physics from the University of British Columbia. Prior to starting StarFish, he worked in diverse areas such as lithium battery development and manufacturing, UV spectroscopy instrumentation and hi-fi audio speakers. Under his leadership StarFish has grown into a diverse professional organization with clients around the world and 100% focus on medical devices. Scott is a past Chair and current member of the LifeSciences British Columbia board, member of the 2022 VIATEC Board of Directors, Fellow of The Canadian Academy of Engineering, winner of the EY Entrepreneur Of The Year2017 Pacific Awards Technology category, 2017 recipient of the VIATEC Technology Champion award, and volunteers with Junior Achievement, Entrepreneurs Organization, and University of British Columbia.
