    Abstract

Medtech product design is being transformed by consumer friendly wearable medical devices and smartphone Apps. An outstanding example is diabetes mellitus, a devastating disease which can lead to, if not controlled, multiple consequences such as blindness, kidney failure, amputation, and premature death. Approximately 7.4 million diabetics in the US rely on insulin.
    .
These sophisticated devices and software make possible continuous blood sugar monitoring, are readily self-managed by patients, and can encourage healthful behavior changes. Insurance companies and investment groups now understand the tremendous cost savings that can be accrued from the tighter control of blood glucose levels.
    .
Our speakers will show us three different ways in which technology is helping patients with diabetes control their glucose levels and thus decrease their chances of having devastating complications.
